Quick answer

A tub or shower swap usually takes 3 to 6 working days. A full bathroom remodel takes about 2 to 4 weeks of on-site work. Add 1 to 3 weeks before the start for vanities, fixtures and tile to arrive, and a few days at the end for custom glass, which is measured after the tile is done.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

It depends on the scope. These are the typical durations once work starts on site:

ProjectOn-site working daysBathroom out of service
Vanity, toilet and floor refresh2 – 4 days1 – 3 days
Shower replacement (panel system)3 – 5 days3 – 5 days
Tub-to-shower conversion3 – 6 days3 – 6 days
Custom tile shower7 – 12 days7 – 12 days
Full bathroom remodel, same layout2 – 3 weeksMost of the job
Full remodel with layout or plumbing changes3 – 4 weeksMost of the job

These are working days, not calendar days, and they don’t include the lead time to order materials before the start date.

What happens each day of a full remodel?

A typical full remodel of a Fort Wayne hall bath, keeping the same layout:

DaysStageWhat’s happening
1Protection & demoFloors covered, dust barrier up, old fixtures, tile and drywall removed
2 – 3Repairs & framingSubfloor fixes, blocking for grab bars, niche framing, any wall changes
3 – 5Plumbing & electrical rough-inNew valve, drains and supply lines; GFCI circuits, lights and vent fan
5 – 6Rough-in inspectionAllen County inspector checks the work before the walls close
6 – 8Walls & waterproofingCement board or foam board, waterproofing membrane, flood test on the pan
8 – 12TileShower walls, floor, then grout
12 – 13Cure & paintGrout and thinset cure; walls painted
13 – 15Fixtures & finishVanity, top, toilet, trim, accessories, caulk
15+Final inspection & glassFinal inspection; glass measured, then installed when it arrives

An acrylic or solid-surface wall system instead of tile can take several days off the middle of that schedule.

What has to happen before work starts?

Material lead times are the biggest factor most people don’t plan for:

  • Stock vanities, toilets and faucets: often days to a week.
  • Semi-custom vanities and specialty tile: commonly 1 to 3 weeks.
  • Shower bases and wall systems: usually 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Permit: the application goes in once the scope is final. See our Fort Wayne permit guide.

We don’t start demolition until the key materials are on hand. Pulling out a bathroom and then waiting on a back-ordered vanity is how a three-week job becomes six.

What causes bathroom remodel delays?

  • Changes after demo. Switching tile or moving a niche mid-job means reordering and redoing work.
  • Hidden damage. Older Fort Wayne homes can reveal rotted subfloor, corroded galvanized pipe or cracked cast iron once the walls open. Fixing it properly adds a day or two.
  • Inspection scheduling. The rough-in inspection has to pass before the walls close.
  • Backordered items. This is mostly glass, specialty fixtures and custom tops.
  • Cure times. Waterproofing, thinset and grout need time. Rushing them causes the failures you see in five-year-old showers.

Why can’t the waterproofing and tile be rushed?

The days that look slow from the outside, when the walls are up but nothing new seems to be happening, are the ones that decide whether the shower lasts.

  • Waterproofing membranes need to cure before tile goes on, and a good installer flood-tests the shower pan to make sure it holds water before covering it.
  • Thinset (the tile adhesive) needs to set before grouting, or tiles can shift.
  • Grout and silicone need time before the shower gets wet.

Most shower failures we’re called to fix, like loose tiles, stained grout or water damage on the ceiling below, trace back to someone skipping or rushing one of these steps. A schedule that builds in cure time is a sign of a contractor doing it right.

How does a panel shower compare on time?

If downtime is your main worry, the wall material is the biggest lever:

Wall systemWet-area install timeNotes
Acrylic or solid-surface panels1 – 2 daysNo grout, no cure time for tile
Large-format porcelain tile3 – 5 daysFewer grout lines than small tile
Small tile, mosaics, niches, bench5 – 7 daysMost labor-intensive

How long does a 5x8 bathroom remodel take?

The 5x8 hall bath is the most common bathroom in Fort Wayne. Gutting and rebuilding one in the same layout usually takes about 2 to 3 weeks on site. A panel shower system keeps it closer to two weeks. A fully tiled shower with a niche and a bench pushes it toward three. Moving the toilet or drain, or turning the tub into a curbless shower, can add another week.

What if it’s your only full bathroom?

Plenty of Fort Wayne ranches and bungalows have one full bath. Some ways to manage:

  • Plan the shower-out window. We’ll tell you which days you won’t have a shower before you sign.
  • Keep the toilet working where possible. On shower and tub swaps it usually stays in use. On full remodels, we can reset it temporarily on some days.
  • Choose faster systems. A panel wall system instead of tile can cut days of downtime. See acrylic vs. tile showers.
  • Book around life. Schedule a remodel around travel or a stay with family to make the out-of-service week much easier.

How do you keep a remodel on schedule?

Make the finish decisions before demo day, approve a written scope, and work with someone who orders materials before tearing anything out. More questions

How long does a 5x8 bathroom remodel take?

A full remodel of a 5x8 hall bath usually takes about 2 to 3 weeks of on-site work if the layout stays the same. A fully tiled shower or plumbing changes can add several days.

Can I use my bathroom during a remodel?

Not for most of it. Expect the bathroom to be out of service from demo day until the toilet and shower are reconnected near the end. For a shower or tub swap, the shower is usually out for 3 to 6 days, and the toilet can often stay in use.

Why does custom glass take so long?

Frameless glass is cut to fit the finished tile, so it can't be measured until tiling is done. Fabrication typically takes another 1 to 2 weeks, but you can use the shower with a temporary curtain in the meantime.
